Almost one year later we're back in another SEO contest called sorcier glouton. This time we play in MSN (.fr), aiming to rank first on this query.

The final move (June 14, around 8:00PM)on Google was the good one. Our mangeur de cigogne, stuck in 2nd position since the end of May suddenly jumped in 1st position and won the contest.

Final results are:
- 1st position in the contest (see official results)
- 4th position in the championship (see official results)

This final move in Google was as welcome as unexpected. Our mangeur de cigogne thanks all the websites that helped, providing backlinks.

What will happen with this weblog now the competition is over? Probably not much. It's on its way to the web museum. A sad end for this happy end ;)

One week to go: mangeur de cigogne goes cloaking

Next Tuesday (June 15) will be D-day for the mangeur de cigogne. Google is still frozen with old cache versions for most of the mangeur de cigogne (except the leader), and our mangeur de cigogne stuck in position 2. The filter hypothesis seems to be confirmed.

It's now time for the competitors to use their finals tricks. We had thought of a certain final trick to take the lead of the competition now, but we had to imagine a new one to try to take our mangeur de cigogne out of the filter (the goal remaining the same: position 1).

This final trick is now implemented in our mangeur de cigogne. Don't look for it: our mangeur de cigogne is cloaked for Google, so that our competitors cannot see what we are doing. In fact they will know only if the trick works, since fresh cache will then become available again in Google. But when they see it, it's too late for them to copy ;)

On the championship side, our mangeur de cigogne is ranked #4 and will probably finish in this position. At least this objective (top 10 for the championship) will be achieved. Hopefully we will achieve the other one as well;)

Would that be an OOP (Over Optimization Penalty) filter that Google applies on these over optimized pages? We have to admit that mangeur de cigogne has got plenty of good reasons to be filtered. He's been kind of spammy in this backlinks race. Our Mangeur de cigogne stands in position 4 in this frozen situation.

Mangeur de cigogne today ranks #2 on all data centers. Best position ever for mangeur de cigogne. He had been second in the past, but only on some DCs. Google is stabilizing, and the bots seem to be done with their full-crawls. Google is now ready to start dancing.

Mangeur de cigogne again ranks #3 on this championship day. Last Friday this position 3 was lucky. Today, it's unlucky. Mangeur de cigogne was ranked #2 all day long on google.com and on 9 data centers out of the 12. Bad luck, when the championship request was made, the response came out of one of the 3 data centers seeing mangeur de cigogne 3rd.

Mangeur de cigogne remains as zen as usual. In an interview with CNN today, he said: "This bloody Google is a mother fucker son of a bitch". We agree...

Altruistic as a mangeur de cigogne…

Surprise this morning. The mailboxes of the mangeur de cigogne were literally flooded with sympathy messages: "I knew you were the best!", "You've always been my favorite!", "You're gonna make it, great job!", "My gift to you: a trick to become first", "I've been helping you since the beginning". Even one "I love you. I will be your thing", not to mention an amazing one talking about blowjobs (this one made the mangeur de cigogne blush. He's kind of shy).

At first, not well awaken (he had not had his gallon of coffee yet), the mangeur de cigogne did not understand what was happening (his brain needs caffeine to warm up). Going again through these messages, he noticed a strange detail: all of them proposed to swap a link.

Going ahead with his morning web routine, the mangeur de cigogne ended up on google.com, checking his favorite keyword: "mangeur de cigogne". Few milliseconds later, the whole thing lightened. The mangeur de cigogne was now ranked #4! He suddenly realized that this mailbox thing was not a coincidence.

Life is hard. At least the mangeur de cigogne now knows what will happen when he wins the lottery…

It just took 2 days since the announcement on this blog, for our mangeur de cigogne to enter the top 5. The weapon of mass destruction we have tested is confirmed to be efficient. It has probably not given its best yet, but it will. We can dream of position 4 by the end of the week.

This was for auto-satisfaction. Here are the bad news:

1- Our mangeur de cigogne is now beyond Serps'. We fear this can't last. As soon as the guy comes back from vacation and touches his mangeur de cigogne, we're dead.

2- ApocalX is the new leader of the competition. It's not a bad news by itself. He probably deserves it, we are even happy for him. More concerning is that it proves the power of the Empire. And when we say "Empire", we immediately think "Siddartha"... Scary isn't it? ;)

There is no way it's going to continue like that. So far the only result of our optimization efforts has been to keep our mangeur de cigogne playing cat and mouse with Marie's mangeur de cigogne between position 6 and position 7. It's been fun but we want more.

We've decided to start testing one of our weapons of mass destruction: the objective is clearly to enter the top 5 within the next week (deadline Sunday May 9). Should we fail, we will consider quitting the competition.

Only idiots don't change their minds. We did.

Originally, the only goal the mangeur de cigogne competition was to rank first in Google on June 15. When the championship league was created, at first we didn't like it. We didn't and still don't feel strong enough to win both competitions. Fighting for the championship league would require cloaking our page, because we can't afford showing to our competitors what will make us win on June 15. Today we don't want to cloak since we exchange links with other mangeur de cigogne. Therefore, we've decided to remain focused on the initial June 15 objective...

However...

We have to admit that the championship league is a great thing for the competition. It brings a lot of animation in it. Every Tuesdays and Fridays, at noon, we're excited to see how we and the other competitors rank. It's also true that good SEO should be judged on the long term, not on one shot. This dimension is the meaning of the championship league. That's why we've decided to take the challenge of finishing the championship league in the top 10... and of course #1 on June 15 ;)

We've often been mentioning our roadmap in this mangeur de cigogne competition. Today, we're telling you what this roadmap is. The first day we entered the competition (March 2), we set the following targets for our mangeur de cigogne:
- Be in the top 15 at the end of April,
- Be in the top 10 at mid-May,
- Be in the top 5 at the end of May,
- Be #1 on June 15.
So far, so good! Our mangeur de cigogne is currently ranked between #4 and #8. Is it going to be easier than expected?

The mangeur de cigogne contest welcomes a new competitor today. He his English and his résumé is... pretty frightening. This webmaster is the winner of the US SERPS competition. This competition was very similar to the mangeur de cigogne one. Competitors had to rank first in Google on "SERPS". The guy did it with this page.

Strange moves tonight

We jump from rank #7 to #5 tonight as 2 major competitors, ApocalX and the .com dramatically drop. Apo's cache suddenly reverted to March 18? Very strange. We experience this kind of shitty behavior from time to time, but never in such a serious way. Is it because ApocalX seems to be tired and close to leave the contest? We don't think so. He should be back in the top 5 soon. At least we certainly hope so...

When we first launched our mangeur de cigogne link farm many competitors could not believe it. They immediately suspected we were cloaking. After a while, our first free for all mangeur de cigogne link pages start to appear in Google. Its cache proves our honesty. Competitors realize that we were not cheating and enroll their page. Finally our farm is becoming prosperous... Stork eaters are like Saint Thomas. They trust it now they can see it. A lot of fun in view ;-)...

Long time no see. We've been away from this blog for a while, busy hunting links. We now feel guilty for this since we've discovered that taggle honored it with a permanent link ;-) See, we're back with more news.

So what happened since our last post:
- Abacus (a competitor?) dumped our mangeur de cigogne in a famous link farm (March 20). Was he trying to have it blacklisted, or did he think it could help us? We'll never know. Anyway, it had no effect so far...
- A competitor says that this blog redirects google to taggle's mangeur de cigogne. Funny one. Read full story...
- Our mangeur de cigogne is currently navigating between rank#6 and Rank#11, depending on google cache (yeah! We're still experiencing this revert thing from time to time). We're happy with this. It perfectly fits our roadmap. Roadmap? More details coming soon...

Phase #2: hunting links

So far, we've been mainly focusing our efforts on optimizing our mangeur de cigogne page. There's still a lot of room for improvement in it, but we have plenty of time for that. In-page content is obviously a major influencing factor for Google ranking, but won't be the determining one for the final result of the contest. All of the major competitors know how to do that.

The key point that will make the decision is the number of backlinks. It's obvious looking at the current ranking. Entering phase #2 of the competition, we've decided to actively start hunting links (well, this blog is a first attempt). Note that we offer backlinks in PageRank=5 or PageRank=6 pages for every link you make to us. Interested?

Just time for us to write the previous post and Google updated again. The cache version of our mangeur de cigone page was updated to March 17... and it's back to rank #7 in the contest.
We knew this would happen. We're just happy (and surprised) it happened so fast :))

We're worried

We mentioned in our previous post that last night's Google dance made our page drop from rank 8 to rank 14 in the competition.

That's no big deal. Nothing to worry about before June 14 ;-) The scary thing is that the cache version of our page in Google reverted to its March 7 version. Meanwhile, most of the other competitors' pages have a "March 16" freshdate in Google's cache. It's probably the reason why our page dropped. It's also why we are confident that it will come back to page 1 of Google results as soon as its cached version in Google has been updated. We just know this might take up to 3 weeks. Should this happen again beginning of June, it would then be a big penalty for us in the contest :((

We already had recently noticed that it took Google a lot of time to index new pages at ActuLab. We also had often seen this cache reversion phenomenon. The question is: "why does it happen to us and not to most of the other sites?" We sure will keep on looking for the explanation.

Pagerank is bullshit

Google dance last night brought our mangeur de cigogne page a PageRank of 4. That's the good news. The bad news is that our page drops from rank 8 to rank 14 in the competition. Some pages ranked above ours only have a PageRank of 3.
No surprise, just a confirmation that PageRank has become a real minor factor in Google. It's just made for suckers. With PR, we lost our last bad reason to use Internet Explorer. Let's switch to Mozilla.

A new link to the Unofficial Report @ taggle.org has just been added in the "contest links" section of this blog (on the left). Don't worry, we're not insane. We just wanted to thank taggle.org for teaching us so much in this competition. Looking at their mangeur de cigogne page and its persistent 3rd position in Google, it became obvious to us that sound in a webpage has a major positive influence on its Google ranking.

SEO or poker game?

We hit the headlines at taggle.org again. We're proud of the interest their "Unofficial Report" show for our strategy, but aren't they relying on this blog too much?

For maximum efficiency, a good strategy has to remain secret. Knowing that our competitors daily come and read this blog, why would we disclose our strategy here? One can even think that what we are saying is just the opposite of what we are actually doing ;-)

On the other hand, most of our readers, knowing that we know that they come here, probably think that we are just saying the opposite of what we're actually doing. In this case, disclosing our true strategy is the best way of misleading them :))

One can continue this little game to the infinite. At the end of the day, our strategy is very simple: psychology and disinformation.

As ApocalX says, is this still SEO? We believe it's more of a poker game.

We hate the bloody new championship league

Many competitors say they like the new championship league. We don't. They say good SEO is supposed to last, and therefore should be judged on weeks. They might be true in the "real life" but don't forget we are not in the real life. We were in a competition where every trick was allowed, the main one being to stay hidden until the last day.

We had built our roadmap to be first on D day, not during the next 3 months. The #1 ranked "mangeur de cigogne" is obviously THE target of the others. What will prevent them, in a competition where every trick is OK, to just copy and paste the content of the leading page?

For now, at ActuLab, we remain focused on our initial target (June 15). Should we change our mind and decide to reach the top before the deadline, we would for sure consider cloaking our page to hide it from our competitors. They're pushing us to crime with their bloody championship...

Parallel competition: championship league

Every time the official ranking will be published (twice a week), the top 20 sites will be awarded points. On June 15, we will have 2 winners: the real one, and the one of this championship league. Surprise! Blogger is certainly a great blogging tool, but we're lucky that "mangeur de cigogne" is a competition based on Google results, not on MSN results. There is absolutely no chance that this blog, or any Blogger blog hosted at blogspot enters the MSN index. Why is that? Because the robots.txt file completely disallows any crawling of MSNBot.
War between Google, owner of Blogger, and Microsoft seems to have started. And they're not just fighting for storks :-)
